Just as our lungs need air to breathe, as does our face. Regardless of my inability to gently and effectively cover my face in a colorful pallet, I always feel this is yet another blessing in disguise. Skin is fascinating to me. Yes, eating a diet consisting mostly organic fruits, vegetables, meats and dairy is most beneficial to a healthy physical and mental health, but why do we neglect our largest organ and first line of defense: our skin?

These ingredients are now being found to cause anti-inflammatory skin reactions, as well as some serious diseases, illnesses, and the biggest unresolved issue: hormonal imbalances.
As a quarter life century homo sapien, I am curious about everything. I also think I know a lot more than I’ve already experienced. “You other mid-twenty advocates rejoice!” Growing up, I have popped, picked and probed at all of my  inflamed white heads, hide and seek black heads, and our biggest nemesis: cysts. I never understood why after all of the so-called “acne buster” products never did a dang thing to my skin. I loathed, envied, and cried over other’s porcelain physiques. I tried everything under the sun, until finally resorting to Accutane. Yes, this harsh and organ tampering product was sure to clear up my skin, as it actually puts a halt to oil production, leaving you with dry skin, eczema patches and fatigued muscles. But hey, I was happy, I finally had clear skin, and also a lot of leftover scaring.
I was in college, my skin was still taking a toll on track practice produced sweat; trapped beneath Clinique. I felt hopeless and alone. So, get out your lipsticks, moisturisers, and face powders, and check the label on the back, because here are ten unbelievable substances that you had no idea are in your cosmetics.
1. Urine
Well, it’s not actually urine that is used in cosmetics, but it is a compound that is found in pee that finds its way into all sorts of beauty products. Urea is used in moisturisers, antiperspirants, and shampoos. One of the reasons that it is used is because it attracts and retains water. Don’t worry, though, it’s perfectly safe, and most urea that is now used commercially is produced synthetically and not actually extracted from urine.
2. Whale vomit
This is an ingredient that you will only find in very expensive French or Swiss perfumes, because elsewhere, manufacturers now use a synthetic alternative. It wasn’t so long ago, though, that ambergris, which is a secretions made in a whale’s stomach, was being widely used in perfumes to make the scent last for longer.
3. Chicken bone marrow
You will find the bone marrow of chickens in moisturisers and face creams. In fact, you might be surprised at just how much animal products are used in cosmetics. Chicken bone marrow is used because it is an anti-inflammatory, and because it is believed that it promotes the growth of new skin cells.4. Sheep wool wax
Another animal by product that is often used in cosmetic is the oils that are extracted from sheep’s wool. Check the ingredients in most lotions and moisturising products and you will probably find lanolin, which is sheep’s wool wax.

Your beautiful red lipstick is quite likely red because it has beetle juice in it. The red dye called carmine, which is present in red lipsticks, red drinks, and in some foods too, is extracted from the bodies of little bugs called cochineal beetles. It’s perfectly safe and natural, but this might make might think differently about your bright red lipstick the next time you use it.
7. Shark liver oilIf you have very dry skin, then the chances are that you have been slathering shark liver oil on your face. Squalene is a natural compound that has amazing moisturising properties and, up until fairly recently, the most common source of the chemical was shark livers. More recently, manufacturers have turned to vegetable sources of squalene because of the public concern over shark hunting.
8. Rust
Hiding behind the innocent sounding names of and pigment red 101 pigment brown 6 is none other than rust. Ferrous oxide, or rust, is used in products such as blusher and bronzer to give them their colour.
9. Snail slime
The gooey slime that snails excrete is used in anti-ageing serums and lotions. Snail slime is apparently a good source of elastin and glycolic acid, both of which are used to help people fight their wrinkles. You will usually find snail slime in only the most expensive types of anti-ageing treatments.
10. Fish scales
The shimmer and shine that you see in makeup products is provided by something called Pearlescence, which is the substance that makes fish scales shiny. It’s actually the most widely used fish by product in the world and most of it is harvested from herring.
None of these weird products that are used in cosmetics will do you any harm, but it’s rather odd that scientists still don’t seem to be able to come up with anything better than what nature has to offer.

Kinect Motion Sensors
Kinect motion sensors were originally designed for the xBox, but researchers at the University of Missouri are now testing them to see if they can monitor ageing people.

This is considered to be a less intrusive way of monitoring people than by using video cameras, since kinect motion sensors only transmit silhouette images.
The system has already been rolled out at a retirement home in Missouri, and the researchers are now looking at seeing how well it works with people living further out, such as in Iowa.
Wireless Sensors For Your Chest
Wireless sensors for your chest were first rolled out in Japan back in 2012, and it is now hoped that they will become par for the course.
What’s so great about them? These wireless sensors track stress levels, body surface temperature, movements and heart beat, and it is hoped they will eventually become a standard part of an ageing person’s wardrobe.
All the data that is date gathered together will then be sent to a PC.
A Bed That Turns Into A Wheelchair
A bed that turns into a wheelchair is another Japanese invention, a country with a rapidly ageing population problem. At present, around 25% of the country is aged over 65.
As such, Panasonic took it upon themselves to invent this nifty bed that helps an ageing person to stay mobile even if they don’t fancy getting out of bed today.
Moreover, Panasonic has gone one step further by creating a robot that can blow dry and shampoo your hair for you.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t chat to you about this or that like hair dressers do.
Virtual Reality
Virtual reality has been talked about since the 1970’s, but it still seems to be a long way from ever becoming an actual physical reality – but it’s getting closer.
But how can virtual reality help with ageing? Well, when you think about it it’s not easy to try to convince ageing people to get on an exercise bike and do some leg work. It can get boring pretty quickly, especially if there is nothing to look at.
Virtual reality, though, transports a person from the familiar confines of their own home into a whole new world, such as California or Italy.
Nurse Alert
Nurse Alert is a pretty cool invention that, although not exactly a magic wand for ageing, does a grand job at keeping people safe.
Old people wear Nurse Alert around their necks, or they can carry it in their pocket. It gives them 24/7 access to nurses, comes with an emergency button, as well as a non-emergency button.
Nurses in the monitoring centre are also swiftly alerted whenever the device happens to fall down. A nurse can call the person to see if they’re okay, and if there is no response they can send out an emergency crew.
The Heaphy Project
You might have heard of the Heaphy Project, but the chances are that you haven’t. The Heaphy Project seeks to provide a solution to the problem of ineffective robots who are meant to help ageing people – but just aren’t very good at what they do.
As such, human workers will soon be able to help robots from a remote location to take care of ageing people. A person would control the robot remotely from a web browser so that, if an elderly person happened to drop something, the human worker would be able to type in the right commands so that the robot would then pick it up. Bingo!
LifeWatch V
LifeWatch V wasn’t with seniors in mind specifically, but people have quickly come to realise how effective this smartphone is with ageing people.
In a nutshell, LifeWatch V helps a senior citizen to easily let their GP know how they’re getting on between check-ups. All they have to do is hold their finger over the phone’s sensors and their heart rate, temperature, stress levels and body fat will be recorded.
LifeWatch V can also help a diabetic to monitor their blood sugar levels, and all the info is uploaded to the cloud.
Taizo The Robot
Taizo The Robot is meant to replace all-action zumba for ageing people who simply don’t feel like popping out to classes today.
Taizo The Robot might not look like a buff fitness instructor (more like the Michelin Man), but this small humanoid is a wizard when it comes to helping seniors do their daily stretching and over various light exercises.
Kabochan
Kabochan is another Japanese invention and, yes, it’s another robot.
Unlike Taizo, though, Kabochan is super cute and has been a HUGE hit in Japan with seniors who enjoy the fact that it knows up to 400 different phrases, can respond to sound, light and movement, and never gets angry. Lovely.
Google Glasses
When Google Glass was first rolled out, everyone was really excited. But then the initial enthusiasm soon waned and people got bored.
Although you might think you’re not getting much out of Google Glass, it works brilliantly for seniors who need a bit of help with recalling place names and everything else.

Tight jeans and shirts cause friction, which in turn puts pressure on your delicate hair follicles. What happens is that they get all defensive and weak – and they start to curl into your skin. Not cool.
Use Tweezers
If you fancy getting all DIY on your ingrown hairs, you could use tweezers to prize the little nasties out of your skin.
Make sure your tweezers are sterile, and always remove your hairs before shaving or waxing. It’s pretty easy to do; simply poke the bump with your needle. It will come out after around a minute. Don’t be scared if a little blood comes out, too. And don’t forget to disinfect the area.
Tip: DON’T let your boyfriend do it. Even if he says he’s a “dab hand with tweezers,” just ignore him.

I admit it; I used to be one of those who dived into the shower and started shaving immediately. It was my routine and I’d done it for years.
And then I found out that this was actually causing my ingrown hairs!
Shaving is a stressful process for the skin. It can easily damage hair follicles, which consequently encourages ingrown hairs. To reduce the risk of this happening, it is advisable that you shave at the end of your shower.
What you’re essentially doing is hydrating your hair follicles so that they become soft. When they’re soft, they don’t tug and pull as much. Thus, they don’t curl.
Exfoliate Often

This is because when your layer of dead skin is really thick, it makes it harder for a hair to break through and shoot up straight like a dandelion.
